Coastal Cleanup Day
Today the kids and I did our part in Costal Cleanup Day and walked Alameda's South Shore beach in search of trash (of which there was suprisingly little). The kids really got into it, calling it a "treasure hunt." Here's a sample of what we found.
- several large (spent) bottles of beer. Interesting to note the further West we were, the quality of the labels dropped from Sierra Nevada to Black Cobra.
- many cigarette butts
- several plastic mouthpieces from cheap cigarillos
- two sandals from different sets (I always wonder how this happens, did they walk home with just one sandal on their foot?)
- several chunks of Styrofoam, most of it probably from busted up ice coolers but some chunks looked like the marine variety that you would find floating a dock
- a piece of plastic which Tyler now covets as a rare sample of "fool's granite"
- one syringe (minus needle) and a small plastic bag probably used for the junkie's heroin fix
- two plastic condom wrappers
- the classifieds pages from a Vietnamese newspaper
- several straws
- a couple ribbons attached to popped balloons
- one plastic shopping bag (deftly retrieved by Julia from the surf)
- one tennis ball (minus fuzz)
